White Snake Root - Eupatorium rugosum

Suited to a woodland setting or a moist meadow edge, white snake root is a is one of the few butterfly garden plants to flower in part shade during the early fall.

Care should be taken as white snake root can spread by both rhizomes and vigorous reseeding.

Importance as a caterpillar food source: White snake root is not used as a caterpillar food source for butterflies. Should caterpillars appear on your white snake root plants, they are most likely caterpillars of moths.

Importance as a butterfly nectar source: Butterflies prefer full sun, white snake root prefers part shade. White snake root blooms at a time when summer nectar souces are decreasing yet some butterfly populations are not. With these considerations in mind, white snake root's importance as a butterfly nectar source varies by location and year.
